About Shawwal

Shawwal is the month of Eid al-Fitr (1st Shawwal). Fasting six days of Shawwal after Eid is recommended. Whoever fasts Ramadan and follows it with six days of Shawwal, it is as if they fasted the entire year.

About the Hijri Calendar

The Hijri (Islamic) calendar is a lunar calendar based on the moon cycle, consisting of 12 months alternating between 29 and 30 days. It begins from the Prophet Muhammad's (PBUH) migration (Hijra) from Mecca to Medina in 622 CE, and is also known as the Islamic Lunar Calendar.

The Umm al-Qura calendar is officially used in Saudi Arabia to determine the beginning of Hijri months based on precise astronomical calculations of crescent moon birth and visibility. It is used to set the dates of Ramadan, Hajj, Eids, salaries, and official holidays.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Umm al-Qura calendar is the official Hijri calendar used in Saudi Arabia. It relies on precise astronomical calculations to determine the beginning of lunar months and is used for religious and official occasions including Ramadan, Hajj, and Eids.

A Hijri month has either 29 or 30 days. Odd-numbered months (Muharram, Rabi al-Awwal, etc.) typically have 30 days, and even-numbered months have 29 days. A Hijri year contains 354 or 355 days, about 11 days shorter than a Gregorian year.

The Hijri calendar is lunar, based on the moon cycle (~29.5 days per month), while the Gregorian is solar, based on Earth's orbit around the sun (~365.25 days). This makes the Hijri year about 11 days shorter, which means Islamic occasions shift earlier each Gregorian year.

You can view the full year with all 12 months on one page, or click any month to see its complete details with the Gregorian equivalent for each day. Use the Previous/Next buttons or dropdown menus to navigate between months and years. You can also use keyboard arrow keys for quick navigation.

The calendar displays major Islamic events such as the start of Ramadan, Eid al-Fitr, Eid al-Adha, Day of Arafah, Isra and Mi'raj, and the Prophet's Birthday (Mawlid), as well as the sacred months and recommended fasting days.

The four sacred months are: Dhul Qadah (11th), Dhul Hijjah (12th), Muharram (1st), and Rajab (7th). They are called sacred because fighting was prohibited during them. Extra worship and fasting are recommended in these months.

The Islamic week begins on Saturday and ends on Friday. Friday (Jumu'ah) is the most important day of the week for Muslims, featuring the Friday congregational prayer. In this calendar, Fridays are highlighted in green.

The beginning of a Hijri month depends on the birth of the new crescent moon. In the Umm al-Qura calendar, astronomical calculations are used to determine the moment of crescent birth and its visibility. Some countries rely on actual physical sighting of the crescent moon.

A leap Hijri year has 355 days (instead of 354), with Dhul Hijjah having 30 days instead of 29. Leap years occur approximately every 2-3 years in a 30-year cycle (11 leap years out of every 30).
