Square Root, Cube Root, and nth Root Calculator
This calculator finds roots of any number with high precision. The square root of a number is the value that, when multiplied by itself, gives that number, so the square root of 25 is 5. The cube root is the value that, multiplied by itself three times, returns the original number, which is why the cube root of 27 is 3. The nth root extends the same idea to any index you choose.
Roots are the inverse of powers. Where squaring raises a number to the power of two, taking a square root undoes that operation. This relationship makes roots essential in geometry, algebra, physics, statistics, and finance, for example when finding the side of a square from its area or working with growth rates.
How to Use the Tool
Enter the number you want to evaluate, choose the type of root, and read the result. For the nth root, set the index first. Most non-perfect roots are irrational, meaning the digits go on forever, so the answer is shown rounded to a sensible number of decimals.
Note that negative numbers have no real square root because no real value squared is negative, but they do have real cube roots. Showing the steps helps students see why each answer is correct rather than just memorising it.
