Understanding the Iqama in Saudi Arabia

The Iqama is the official residence permit that allows expatriates to live and work legally in Saudi Arabia. It links each resident to a sponsor or employer, records the profession on file, and serves as the primary identity document for everyday tasks such as opening a bank account, signing a lease, registering a vehicle, or accessing government and healthcare services through national platforms.

This tool helps you keep track of the details that matter most: your Iqama expiry date, when the renewal window opens, and the costs and penalties that can apply if the permit lapses. Because the Iqama is tied to a Hijri-based validity period, the Gregorian date you remember may not match the actual government record, which is a common source of confusion.

Why staying ahead of expiry matters

Renewing on time helps you avoid late fees, keeps your dependents covered, and prevents disruptions to work and travel. As a general rule, begin the process before the listed expiry date rather than waiting until the final days, and confirm that associated fees such as the dependent fee and work permit charges are settled. Always verify current dates and amounts against official sources, since rules and government fees are periodically updated.
