What Is Laylat al-Qadr (The Night of Decree)?
Laylat al-Qadr is described in the Quran as better than a thousand months. Here is what this blessed night means, when it is sought, and how Muslims spend it.
What is it?
Laylat al-Qadr — the Night of Decree or Power — marks the night the Quran began to be revealed. The Quran says it is "better than a thousand months," so worship on this single night carries immense reward.
When is it?
It falls within the last ten nights of Ramadan, and is most emphasised on the odd nights — the 21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th, and 29th. Its exact night is hidden, encouraging Muslims to seek it across all the last ten nights.
How it is observed
Muslims spend the night in prayer (especially Tahajjud), reciting the Quran, making supplication (dua), and seeking forgiveness. A well-known dua for the night asks Allah for pardon, as Allah loves to pardon.
