The dependent fee — officially the "financial compensation for dependents" — is one of the most important costs an expat living with family in Saudi Arabia must plan for. This guide explains its 2026 amount, how and when it is paid, the exemptions, a worked example, and how to calculate it.
How much is the dependent fee in 2026?
The dependent fee is SAR 400 per month for each dependent — that is SAR 4,800 per year for every sponsored family member (spouse, children, any dependent under sponsorship). It is charged for the full requested iqama period, paid in advance as a single sum.
| Dependents | Per month | Per year |
|---|---|---|
| 1 dependent | SAR 400 | SAR 4,800 |
| 2 dependents | SAR 800 | SAR 9,600 |
| 3 dependents | SAR 1,200 | SAR 14,400 |
| 4 dependents | SAR 1,600 | SAR 19,200 |
When and how is it paid?
The fee is paid in advance in one of two cases:
- When issuing or renewing the iqama — paid for the full renewal period (e.g. one year).
- When issuing an exit & re-entry visa — in some cases charged for the visa period.
The process is completed by depositing the amount into your bank account, then paying electronically through the Absher or Muqeem platform.
Exemptions
Premium Residency holders are exempt from the dependent fee — a key benefit of that residency type. Treatment may also differ for some special categories. Check the Muqeem platform or the Passports Directorate for your exact status.
Worked example
A resident with a wife and two children (3 dependents) renewing the iqama for one year:
Calculation: SAR 400 × 3 dependents × 12 months
Total = SAR 14,400 per year.
Financial planning tip
Add the dependent fee to your annual budget alongside iqama renewal and health insurance costs. Since it is paid as a lump sum, make sure you have it ready before the renewal date to avoid delays and any penalties from an expired iqama.
