Zakat al-Fitr FAQ
It is obligatory on every Muslim, young or old, male or female, who possesses food beyond their needs on the day and night of Eid. The head of household pays for all family members, including infants.
One Sa' (approximately 3 kilograms) of the staple food of the region per person. In Saudi Arabia, the staple food is rice, estimated at approximately 25 SAR per person (2026).
It becomes due at sunset on the last day of Ramadan. The best time to pay is 1-2 days before Eid al-Fitr prayer. Some scholars allow paying from the beginning of Ramadan. It should not be delayed past Eid prayer without excuse.
Scholars differ on this. The original ruling is to pay in food, but some scholars including Abu Hanifa permitted paying the monetary equivalent in cash, which is the practice adopted by many official bodies in Saudi Arabia for ease of distribution and benefit to the poor.
Zakat al-Fitr is due on every Muslim at the end of Ramadan with a fixed amount (one Sa' of food). Zakat al-Mal is due on wealth that reaches the Nisab threshold after one lunar year, at 2.5% of total wealth. Zakat al-Fitr purifies the fasting person and provides food for the needy.
